Help a sister out.

So, I’m in a bit of a predicament.  All I’ve said for the last few months is “I want one weekend where I can just chill out and not have to do anything!”  I finally got my wish — I’ve got nothing that I have to do this weekend.

Problem is, I don’t know what to do with myself.  And, every single time I get a free weekend to myself, I end up riding the lonely train.  Excuse me, conductor?  Bitter, party of one.  And I’d like a window seat, please.

I hate it when I do this to myself, because by late Friday night, I usually end up in my shower wailing “Boyfriend?  Family?  ANYONE WITH SKIN, GOD?”

It is a treasured tradition that He and I share on these rare weekends.

And so, I’m trying very hard to come up with a plan for the weekend that doesn’t involve large amounts of chocolate and a Julia Roberts movie.

I don’t have any hobbies, unless you count fixing and re-fixing my hair over and over again.  I guess I could spend my weekend doing that, but I think we all know (or at least I hope you know) that it just isn’t wise to subject your hair to that kind of harsh treatment from heat (i.e. blow dryers, flat irons, etc.).  And I wouldn’t dream of hurting my hair like that — the very thought makes me feel faint.

I could try to cook something, but the last time I did that (earlier this week) I set off all the smoke detectors in my house.  Snuggles and Cuddles still haven’t recovered.

So, my precious lambs, what should I do this weekend?

If you don’t help me out, I’m afraid I’ll become really desperate and attempt some type of craft project. I’d really rather not superglue my fingers together.  Again.  And no, I don’t want to talk about it.

OK…this is kinda crafty, but it doesn’t involve glue! I would totally go to a paint-your-own-pottery place an paint myself a really cute mug or vase or something like that. Add a Bible verse that really ministers to you. You don’t have to be an “arteest”, as they usually have cute sponges and stencils for those who desire to use them. The picking out/deciding on design/painting process takes a couple of hours, and you’ll be able to visit with the others who are there while you paint. At the end of the time, you’ll have accomplished something tangible, and a couple of weeks later, after they fire your creation, you’ll have a fun reminder. If you don’t feel like visiting, take your ipod and have some worship time with God while you paint!

Usually when I have free time, I pounce on it and curl up with a good book.

But maybe this weekend is the opportunity for you to start writing that book?

I should add that I was 32 when I got married…I had lots of those weekends on the lonely train. Maximize your time with God. There are things He wants to do in you and through you during this season. So if that means writing that book…go there with Him! :)

I totally second the whole book writing notion. If you feel like those demons arent too bad to relive right now, start writing them down, or brainstorm ideas for this wonderful book that ALL of your starlite leaders are so ready to rip off the shelves and dive into (i speak for myself included) im just ready to see you minsiter to girls in that way but htats me going off on a tangent ok time to stop rambling haha love you girl!

I have the perfect weekend plans for you!!!! Hop on a flight to LA, where I will pick you up and proceed to drive you to my house. There we will gorge ourselves on Sunny D. and Office re-runs. Followed by the doing of hair. You saw my “hair” pictures this morning. I think you were a bit shocked. lol. ; )

Or…you could make me jealous and wander around Dollywood.

First of all, who ever said that there was ANYTHING wrong with chocolate and Julia Roberts???

Secondly, you could go to your BFF’s house and have a sleepover!

You could go to open houses. I know you are looking for a place to live and even if they are houses that are WAY out of your price range, it is always fun to imagine living there. Who knows maybe your future husband will be doing the same thing and you will bump into him.

Whenever I’m having one of those “I-just-need-a-little-down-time-and-now-I-have-it-but-don’t-know-what-to-do” weekends, I usually go to a local nursery or even Home Depot and puruse the flower/plant department. I love to get my hands dirty and give a pretty living thing a new place to live. It gives me a sense of accomplishment AND brightens up my surroundings. If your thumb isn’t green, ask the folks at the nursery for suggestions on easy-to-maintain choices. Bring a little bit of God’s beautiful creation into view and enjoy the memories of your quiet weekend every time you look at your thriving (hopefully!) new plant.

Oh, I love Tamara’s idea. If you’ve got a pottery painting place, you’ve got to try it. I never thought I would get into something like that, but it is therapeutic. Even more enjoyable if you go alone because you can totally focus.

I would go shopping, and then to Barnes and Noble or some cute book store and read a book (which means look at magazines) and then get a movie…or a whole series of movies!

Someday, when you have a wonderful husband (who believe you me, no matter how fab, will on occassion annoy you to death) and lovely children (who cannot stop picking on each other) are constantly around, you will daydream back to this very weekend…when you were free…free at last…you know the rest :)

ENJOY IT!!!! or at least enjoy it for me. I’m totally jealous of your weekend alone…if you were closer to IA, you could come bleach my flooded basement ;)

Well….my weekends are no longer free since I’m walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. I’ll trade you….you walk 10 miles for me on Saturday and then 6 on Sunday and I’ll eat the chocolate and watch Notting Hill (”I”m just a girl…standing in front of a boy…asking him to love her…”).

OK…seriously, if I had a weekend to spare, I’d actually grab my address book, head over to a Hallmark (or any card store) and buy up a bunch of those $1 cards. Then I’d be off to a coffee house and do some good ol’ fashioned letter writing. Drink a little something (coffee houses do have hot cocoa!), write a little “love ya/miss ya/what up witcha” notes and send them off. Who doesn’t like handwritten stuff??

Good luck! ENJOY IT!!

I love Tamara’s suggestion!

Otherwise, maybe you could treat yourself to a manicure or pedicure. A little beautifying for you not involving hair.

Or, if there’s a TV series that you’ve been wanting to reminisce or catch up on, you can always check out the library or local Blockbuster.

Do you like antique stores? ‘Cause you can find some very cool and funky things at those! It’s like a treasure hunt :-)
Or hit your favorite stores in a shopping-the-clearance-rack marathon. Here are some things I saw on my rounds today:
fullsize 350 thread count Epyptian cotton sheet set $12
ceramic bath accessories (toothbrush holder, etc.) $1.53 each
happy yellow bath sheets $4 each
quilted velvet pillow shams $4.83 ea.
scrapbooking supplies from 97 cents to $4.97 (reg. $8 to $25)
I think pretty much everything I saw or bought on the clearance racks were 70-80% off. Woohoo!
Nothing like a good deal to perk ya right up :-)

I LOVE all of these ideas. Am I the only one that finds cleaning and organizing fun? If so, forget I mentioned it. I’d splurge on a bubble bath. Oh yeah… and definitely get started on that book!!!!

Oh! Kim sounds like my kind of gal!! I’m looking for new sheets Kim! :)
Amy Beth… My weekends are full of dirty diapers, runny noses, and “BUT MOM!”

I LOVE the pedicure/manicure suggestion… I NEED one!

Make/Paint your own pottery sounds cool to… surely my pottery skills have advanced (without practice) since the brownish-greenish lopsided “bowl” I made for my mom in the 3rd grade! Which, by the way, she still has to this day! :) Not because she loved it so much but because she’s a PACK RAT!

If I had a weekend all to myself I would probably sleep in, drink 2 cups of coffee, TAKE A SHOWER, get a pedicure, call a girlfriend for lunch at Panera (my husband and kids don’t like Panera), from there we would go to Target. I would then stop by Blockbuster, come home and lounge on my sofa while catching up on all the tv shows (on DVD) that I can’t watch because they don’t come on PBS kids. :)

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND!!!

No big suggestions, but I had to say that I will be printing this out and consulting it for my next lonely weekend when the kids are away. Just great ideas.
