Coming clean.

I neglected to mention that one of my tasks in taking care of Chandler involved putting together her lunch for school today.

Now, I believe we all are aware of what a great cook I am, so it shouldn’t surprise you that I whipped something fabulous up for Miss Chandler (who is seriously one of THE cutest kids I have ever met!).

I began by placing a small bag of Goldfish in her lunch box; I had, obviously, ground the wheat myself and formed their little fishy-faces in the wee hours of the morning. Then, I placed a couple of cookies in the bag — ones I made from scratch, but of course (I just put them in the Chips Ahoy bag ahead of time so Chandler wouldn’t be intimidated by my incredible baking skills). Next, I took some apples and drained the juice from them to make homemade apple juice which I conveniently packaged in a Mott’s Apple Juice Box with a little bend-y straw (again, didn’t want to intimidate Chandler).

And then there was the sandwich. I couldn’t send my old faithful (peanut butter) because her school doesn’t allow them to have it, so her dad had tipped me off to the idea of a grilled cheese sandwich. Easy, right?

Especially when you ask your waiter at Cracker Barrel to bring you a kid’s grilled cheese to go as you leave the restaurant the night before.

You’re hilarious and I bet Chandler loved her lunch!

But seriously, the school doesn’t allow peanut butter….huh???

I would have been a very malnourished child under those circumstances!

That’s the way I pack my daughter’s lunch. I just don’t want to intimidate the other moms. But it actually makes a kid cool to have the pre-packaged stuff. You did her a favor!!

Another fun idea for fall? Frito pie. Send a personal size bag of fritos, open a jar of chili and put some in a small plastic container (or thermos), put shredded cheese in a ziploc bag. Then at lunch, the child can pour the chili over the fritos, sprinkle cheese over the top and … presto! Frito pie. (One note: you can warm the chili and place in small soup thermos to keep warm and then they pour the chips over the chili and add cheese. My daughter has a microwave that the kids can use, so either way works for us.)

My daughter’s friends LOVE her lunches. I cut her sandwiches w/ a cookie cutter depending on the season. I thoroughly enjoy making a ham sandwich in the shape of a pig.

I also include a handwritten note on her napkin. The kids gather each day to see what I’ve written.

You did a great job!!

That’s a bummer that they don’t allow peanut butter, but I guess peanut allergies are pretty serious business!

The school Chandler attends has a pretty strict no peanut policy. If the child ABSOLUTELY must have peanut products for lunch… because they won’t eat anything else… they have to have their lunch box labeled “PEANUTS” and they have to sit at a special table.
Rather than force Chandler to sit at a “special table”, we talked about it and she decided she could give up her PB sandwich and replace it with Grilled Cheese EVERY SINGLE DAY… that means I’m normally up at 10pm every night making a grilled cheese sandwich. :)
