To wear or not to wear, that is the question.
So, I’m currently writing this from Roomie’s bed where we have decided to do a combo post for you featuring both of us. I would like you to know that, as I type each of these words, I am actually saying them out loud to Roomie in my best Australian voice (I actually do this a lot around her, mainly ’cause it makes her laugh). She is laying beside me making fun of me and threatening to hurt me because I’m making fun of her pregnancy jeans right now (I’M SORRY, BUT REALLY? REALLY?).
Hi, it’s Roomie now. I would like to tell Heidi Murkoff, author of What To Expect When You’re Expecting, all of her little puns and “jokes” are not funny to this pregnant person. How on earth have you sold over 14 million copies. with lines like “Sure, you’re the size of a small hippo…” (page 350, in case you’d like to verify).
AB here now… for the record, Roomie is not the size of even a very small hippo.
Roomie here again. Dearest blog readers: what are your thoughts on the backpack purse? AB, earlier this evening in TJMaxx, said “Hey, is the backpack purse coming back?” I bit my tounge, showing my disgust for the backpack purse while AB continued to look at it. Moments later, we saw a bra-less woman running across the parking lot while wearing a backpack purse. Your thoughts, readers?
IN MY DEFENSE, I was all about the backpack purses back in 3rd grade. And yes, that woman did need a certain undergarment more than she needed that backpack purse.
AB, the backpack purse is over.
Whatev’.
Sorry hun…the backpack purse never was.
Donna Karan has a great new cross body convertible bag. Too spendy, but good to use as an example.
Black & brown are out for fall. Teal, Plum, Pink, Purple.
Wait, are you talking purse or diaper bag? I never use a diaper bag, just a large purse. Fashion before function people.
I say that while wearing holey capris & a torn v-neck.
I’m with Roomie on this one. The backpack purse is indeed O.V.E.R. At least in terms of high fashion.
*However*, I have heard more than one new mom say that a backpack is the best kind of diaper bag.
So there you go.
Discuss.
I agree with Leslie Ruth… Backpack purse, no. Backpack-diaper-bag, definitely. (and then you can just throw your purse in that).
I’m with Roomie. Just say no! Hey guys, come check out my blog. We just had a great family night. They are so much fun. You and Roomie have to get in on this when BB (baby boy) joins you guys! With love!
i know i’ll probably get slammed for this BUT…. i’m gonna have to agree with AB. i work with high school girls. they love the backpack purse. i’m not going to say it’s cutting edge fashion, but i’ll go out on a limb and say at LEAST you won’t get super weird looks if you carry (errrr….. wear) one. that doesn’t mean i suggest it though. but you have to choose the statement you want to make!!
I have seen a lot of moms with a backpack diaper bag. And Vera Bradley sells a Backpack purse. But I think it’s only in if you’re in high school. Sorry!!!!
I certainly hope that the backpack purse is dead! I had one in elementary school, too, but you can get away with a lot back then.
Ok, you guys are totally funny, I love y’all!!

Just to reiterate what has already been said. NO to the backpack purse, but TOTALLY YES to the backpack diaper bag. Those diaper bags that hang at your side REALLY get in the way when you’re trying to juggle baby, car seat, stroller, purse, shopping bags…. But the backpack diaper bag makes one less thing you have to sling around when you’re trying to get baby from Point A to Point B.
P.S. Vera Bradley makes some ADORABLE backpacks that are the perfect size for a diaper bag. If you don’t want to shell out the $$, get a fake at your closest Shoe Dept. =)
BP purse: useful and cute when touring Washington DC, going to Disney World, etc.
Even potentially cute as a diaper bag. Really, you need both hands free!
But as a fashion statement….for everyday… …lacking. Looks a bit childish.
Opps, you did not tell us if you bought one.
I have to agree with all of these ladies. The backpack purse is NOT a high fashion accessory.
However, I will admit that I have carried one on vacation, well OK, on several vacatons. Came in very handy in Disney World. I could carry my bottle of water and an ice cream cone – it is HOT there and free hands are…well, handy!
As for the diaper bag – backpack sounds like a great idea. Surely I am not the only mom who has accidentally hit her child with a diaper bag because is slid off the shoulder while trying to put her down. OH it is AWFUL! Luckily it didn’t hurt her, but that would not happen with a backpack. And let’s not even talk about the guilt that follows an incident like that – I believe that might be a topic for another post.
Hey AB and Roomie!
My MIL has a backpack purse and it drives me nuts…I am on the side of those calling it childish.
Backpack diaper bag: I can see the plus side, but I am a mom that has used a large & compartmented purse as my diaper bag/purse. To each, her own!
Love you girls for sharing your life (lives) with us!
PS. Roomie, I am with you on What to Expect….not my favorite read…TMI on all the scary stuff, so I’m glad that I didn’t get to her jokes, or that would have thrown me over the edge.
I did enjoy “Your Pregnancy Week by Week” and “Your Baby’s First Year Week by Week.” It was more positive with the same information and smaller doses of the scary stuff.
I’m baaack !
I didn’t know backpack purses are out. I didn’t know they were ever “in”. I bought one because of my paralysis and it is easier to carry.
Hanging my head…
AB – just say no to the back pack purse!
What to Expect When Expecting was the worse! It gave me nightmares! I loved Your Pregnancy – Week by Week!
And pregnancy are AMAZING…. Amy Beth someday you will very much regret making fun of Roomie’s jeans. I wish could still wear my little stretchy pant jeans!
LOL!
Only if your my 11 year old daughter is the backpack purse acceptable.
You’ve just described my mom’s favorite outfit (I was refering to the backpack purse sans bra but, come to think of it, she does love her some maternity jeans too). Does that answer your question? NO!! The backpack purse is never acceptable, nor is going commando-on-top! I don’t care how small they are! I do feel some sort of guilty relief that my mom is not the only one clinging for dear life to this fashion faux pas. Was this woman, by any chance, wearing socks under open-toed shoes??
