I wouldn’t exactly call her Sally Sunshine at the moment.
After 4.5 hours of a little drug called Pitocin, we have very little to show for it. In fact, so little that we’ve been discharged and sent home with instructions to watch for nature to take her course.
I’m not familiar with nature — we’ve never met — but I’m going to track down her number and give her a little call to see if we can speed things along. I think it’s in all of our best interests, especially those of us within arm’s distance of our patient.
There have been a couple of bright moments over the last 24 hours though:
1. Ryan and Allie showed up on our doorstep with a 3 lb. bag of ice from Sonic for Roomie to use since hospital ice can’t come close to comparing to the goodness that is Sonic ice. If that wasn’t enough, Ryan went on to inform us that he had another full bag of ice waiting in his freezer as well as a small cooler that he purchased to bring that bag of ice to the hospital when we got closer to the delivery.
Because there’s nothing like bringing a cooler into the Labor and Delivery ward.
“No, really, nurse — it’s just ice! I swear!”
We are classy down here in Tennessee, y’all.
2. Cate, my cousin who is absolutely hilarious, dropped by for a quick visit. I stepped out into the hallway with her while they were giving Roomie an exam. Not wanting to miss anything happening in the room, Cate pressed the side of her face up to the door and said “Luckily I have ears like a fox!”
Lucky, indeed.

Women in their last few weeks can get awful vicious. Just a warning…
She may lash out at you…it’s hormonal. Try not to smother her. It’s such a delicate balance these last few weeks / days.
We’ll be praying.

For the roomie:
Castor oil. I am not kidding.
This is what I did when I was sick of being pregnant with my second baby, and they were threatening a c-section, and I was NOT about to go through that h*** again:
Get a little bottle (4 oz.) of castor oil from the drugstore. They are cheap.
Pour a tall glass of very cold orange juice. Squeeze a lime into it, too, if you like.
Take a clean washcloth and soak it with hot hot water and wring it out. Keep it nearby.
Dump the whole bottle of castor oil into the juice. Stir it in as hard as you can, to get is well mixed.
Immediately, chug the the OJ as fast as you can. If the castor oil leaves your tongue feeling greasy, you can wipe your mouth out with the hot washcloth.
Soon, the castor oil will being to have the effect castor oil is notorious for having. It should also kick start your contractions. The theory is that the uterus begins to cramp in sympathy with the lower intestines. Or something. Anyway, it works. That’s what I did, and my second baby was born vaginally the next afternoon. No c-section! Yay!

This might be a really dumb question, but why ice? Is it the only thing she’s allowed to have in the delivery room or something?
Praying for you two…and the little baby too! ![]()

Oh, my… I know Roomie is probably a little disappointed… you too, I am sure!
Hang in there, gals!
If she tries the castor oil, she is a way braver woman than I… I hear it works, though!

Castor oil did nothing for me except give me the runs. Thank goodness it was all over before I actually went into labor.

Re: the Castor oil. I think the whole point of giving it to a pregnant woman who’s trying desperately to deliver her bundle is that it’s known to cause “gastrointestinal distress.” The hope is that the quivering of the bowels in close proximity to the uterus will jump-start contractions. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn’t. Doctors advise against it because it can leave a pregnant woman dehydrated — and still very pregnant.
I say go do something COMPLETELY unbaby-related. Get her mind off of it. You both need a break. This is mentally and emotionally draining.

If the weather is nice, go for a nice long walk. I ended up jump-starting labor with my second by mall-walking (he was two weeks early, and I wasn’t really trying to go into labor, but I can’t say that it made me unhappy). Walking is much better for you than castor oil, and if the weather is nice, that’s an added bonus. =)

1) I have heard that castor oil really works. I know a woman who took it and she was in labor only a few hours later and labor only lasted only 30 minutes.
2) Sonic ice rocks! The hospital that Abby was born at had the same kind of ice for that reason. I was in charge of getting it for my mom, but by the time I got the ice to her room, it was half gone because I ate it on the way from the ice machine. I was a naughty girl back then…lol!
3)Pray. Pray hard. Pray really hard that Baby will come soon. I know that you have been already. But I will also be praying for ya’ll.

I never had your problem as my babies always came early. I have heard of mothers that walked up and down stairs holding on very tightly so you don’t fall. Brisk walking in the mall can help, but the going up and down stairs might work faster………just be very careful!!! I’ll be praying!
