And to think I didn’t even have an absurdly large hat to hide under.

January21

While I don’t talk about politics on the blog, there’s no ignoring the fact that major events happened in history yesterday. There was former President Bush’s departure from the White House… President Obama’s inauguration…

… and Aretha Franklin’s hat.

Now, I don’t know a lot about Aretha past the fact that all she’s looking for is a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t (and what woman in her right mind isn’t?). I think a lot of people lost a bit of fashion respect for her when she strolled out with that thing strapped to her head (you KNOW that hat didn’t stay on by itself!) but, frankly, I like it.

Normally I would think that wearing a bow that measures larger than the circumference of your head is a definite NO in the fashion world. But you know what? Aretha rocked that hat. You gotta love a girl who can wear something like that with confidence.

Unless you’re wearing a teal leotard with matching shorts to your first day of seventh grade.

Not that I know anyone who ever did that. No, can’t think of anyone.

Moving on.

Last night, I went to this reception thing-y where I felt awkward and out of place. Believe it or not, I don’t go to a lot of things like this I’m invited to because some social situations just scare the curl right out of my hair. This was definitely one of those types of events so, for most of the night, I kept my mouth shut and generally tried to keep from tripping in my high heels. At one point, however, I needed to at least make some effort in a conversation that was taking place around me so I decided to mention something I had heard about Senator Kennedy collapsing yesterday.

Unfortunately, it came out as “Senator Kidney.”

“Normally I would think that wearing a bow that measures larger than the circumference of your head is a definite NO in the fashion world. ”

That is corollary 2.2 to Fashion Rule 131.1 “Pertaining to Bows” which states that it shall be a crime against fashion to wear a bow larger than the diameter of one’s rear-end in public.

The first corollary to that rule states that the wearer is exempt from any repercussions if the gigantic bow in one’s hip region is the direct result of being forced to wear said bow as a bridesmaid.

Corollary 2.1 states that unless you are under 8 years old, wearing a bow in your hair larger than your thumb is indeed considered criminal, although again, the first corollary does apply. Corollary 2.2 states that wearing a bow on your hat which will obscure the view of major national landmarks, is indeed a major NO in the fashion world. But if you’re Aretha, you can get away with pretty much anything.

Wear a hat like Aretha’s to your next reception thingy. I bet you won’t be casting about for conversation topics if you do!

Aretha is Aretha. And, at this stage in the game, she can wear whatever she wants… and obviously she did.

I obviously don’t KNOW Aretha. However, when she came into sight with that bow, I thought “there’s the Aretha I know and love”. Kind of like seeing your Aunt Donna sporting her staple shimmery pink lipstick in the dead of winter or in the dead of anything, for that matter. It’s what she does, it’s who she is, and it’s one reason you love her. Right on up there with Aretha is Tina Turner, Cher, etc. My fashion rule is “As long as you rock it, you can wear it!” A woman’s confidence is her fashion foundation!

I LOVED the bow-hat and actually tried to figure out if there was anyway that a little white girl could pull it off. I don’t think there is, which is sad, but, perhaps I could get away with this: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tmz.com/media/2009/01/0116_lady_gaga_ramey_01.jpg.

When I first saw Aretha in her big bow, I thought, “Whoa, that’s a big bow…I would never do that.” But then I realized that in 20 degree weather you can’t actually work with an outfit, so you can use your hat to make your fashion statement.
