Where in the world are Cousin Cate and Amy Beth going?
About a week ago I gave you a little teaser about Cousin Cate and I going on a BIG adventure together and, since today marks one month from our departure date, we figured it was a good time to break the big news. And, of course, we’re doing it via video because we know how much you love trying to figure out what we’re saying in our country accents.
As a bonus, you’ll also get to see Cate’s bedroom as well as a hilarious little segment with her mother, who happened to overhear us talking about the commandment to honor your mother and father. I think you’ll enjoy hearing what she had to say about Cate’s effort to “honor” her mother. In addition, her mom gives us a little insight into Cate’s dating life, but that’s just bonus material.
Here’s the video; if you’d rather not watch the video because you dislike hearing girls draw out their words like all good southern girls do or it’s just too dark for you, you can skip it and just read the rest of this post below the video.
So… we’re going to EG*PT! As I said in the video, I’m going for my other job (the one I don’t blog about). My trip (including airfare, accommodations, food, etc.) is paid for through my job and I’m also receiving my regular salary while I’m gone (which is fantastic since I just couldn’t afford to take several weeks off from work). We needed another person to go for something to do with part of what we’re doing while we’re there (can I be any more vague about my job?) and, of course, I instantly thought of our dear Cousin Cate.
We’ll be gone for around three weeks, SO I’M PRETTY FLIPPED OUT RIGHT NOW. Cate and I made a list yesterday of everything we need to do in the next 30 days and let me just assure you that it is a VERY long list. We’ve got to find appropriate clothing (basically no skin can show, but it’ll be 100+ degrees so…), get some immunizations (hello, typhoid shot!) and figure out everything we’ll need to pack. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve also got to work on getting a grasp on some basic Ar*b*c so, you know, no big deal, right?
I mean, it’s not like we just have a month left to learn it or something ridiculous like that.
(Very important side note: In an order to not draw attention (via Google searches) to what country we’re going to, there are certain words (Eg*pt, Ar*b*c, etc.) that I can’t fully write out as I write about preparing for the trip. I also need to mention that this is not a religious-based trip; i.e. it isn’t a missions trip or anything of a religious nature. More on that in a later post!)

Fun! One word of warning. Or maybe it’s four words. Anyway…WATCH OUT FOR TRAFFIC. I’ve heard from a number of friends that the worst drivers in the world reside in EG*PT. I’d hate for you to be admiring some glorious piece of architecture (or whatever) and be mowed down by a taxi van.

Haha! I think perhaps there is no greater entertainment than listening to one of us country girls try to speak a foreign language. Great video! Can’t wait to hear more about your trip!

Wow, you’re definitely right about the last-place-you’d-guess part! I’m so excited for you both! I’m not really curious about the job-you-don’t-blog-about, because up until now I figured it was working in an orthodontist’s or insurance office or something like that. Yay!

Prepare yourself for multiple marriage proposals. I had a few friends from college who went there to study, and they came back with plenty of stories.

Aaaaah! How fun! I have a friend who has been living in the Middle East, and while in Egypt, a man offered to marry her in exchange for two camels. Sadly, he was not a good catch. I can’t wait to hear more!
On a side note: This is the first video I have watched (mostly because I read blogs at work *I am horrible*), but you sound so very much like my freshmen year Bible study leader, who I love to pieces.

Awesome! Take it from a girl who lives in the Middle East… thin cotton (don’t even think of bringing synthetic fabric) clothes and comfortable shoes will be your best friends!!! Other things that I’m sure you have though of… a good hat and sunglasses, strong spf, ponytail holders (your hair won’t stand a chance!), shoes and socks trump sandals any day for the sand factor and the disgusting street factor, if you do bring your laptop, consider getting a dust/sand proof silicone keyboard cover, a convenient way to carry water… oh goodness, I can’t think of any more right now. Sorry!
You will have THE BEST time!!
Oh… as for the arab*c- unless you have to, don’t fool with the alphabet. The spoken language is quite different from the written one, and I am guessing you will get by just fine with a few important words and phrases.

Wow. That looks like so much fun.
I don’t know what the immigrant population is like in your neck of the woods, but there are many of Middle E*stern descent here and there are a number of clothing stores that sell more traditional middle e*stern clothing. They are pretty inexpensive around here and the fabric will probably be quite breathable and the styles quite modest.

I think I didn’t get a chance to comment on this one… but wow, so crazy! And for work too? That’s awesome!
I’ll tell you what would be simple… just get a robe. They’re called different things in different countries, but I think you know what I’m talking about. I wish you could borrow mine! Yes, I bought one when we were in Saudi Arabia 2 months ago.
Just get a really light one, preferably in a light color – but go with whatever the tradition is there. Seriously, it will help you stand out less and then you don’t have to worry about all your clothes being modest, you just throw this over the top when you’re in public. It’s really handy!
