You can have your slice of cake, but can you eat it, too?

June10

Well, first of all, I’ve gotten several comments and emails today about how “great” I look in the photos on the post below this, about how you’re excited about how much weight I’ve lost or how much you like my new haircut. This would all be fabulous if I were actually in any of the pictures in that post. I think that some of you confused me with Shannon; I’m definitely not in any of the photos as I’m not really a fan of posting pictures of myself.

Whereas “I’m not really a fan of posting pictures of myself” = Understatement of the Year.

Anyway, I also got some emails asking for details on the Minnie Mouse cake. As I mentioned in that post, Christan and her mother-in-law created the cake from scratch (as far as decorations and such). I got the details from them before I left because I knew you would want to know how to recreate it at home for your own little birthday princesses.

To construct the actual cake, Christan’s mother-in-law used the equivalent of four boxes of cake mix for the bottom cake and three for the top cake. After baking the two cakes, she inserted three “columns” inside the cakes to make sure the top cake wouldn’t “crush” the lower cake. You can buy these columns (and the white base the cake is sitting on) at Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

Christan made the ears out black material that was somewhat like felt but stronger and without the weird texture of felt. So, basically, it wasn’t felt but it was. IN OTHER WORDS, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE NAME OF THE MATERIAL WAS.

Ahem.

She also made the bow. Out of ribbon. See? I do know the name of some materials.

The small “beads” of icing between the two cakes were made out of frosting using a tip attached to a frosting bag. Christan made the white polka dots out of fondant, cutting them in little perfect circles ahead of time and storing them on plastic plates until they were ready to be transferred.

She also made miniature Minnie Mouse heads by cutting even smaller circles out of black fondant and attaching them to the cake before using a teeny-tiny icing tip to create Minnie’s trademark pink bow.

And there you have it — a gorgeous Minnie Mouse cake, all made at home!

Now would probably be a good time to admit that I actually attempted to hand sew (HAND SEW, PEOPLE) a Minnie Mouse skirt for the birthday girl. I cut out little white polka dots, painstakingly sewed them to pink material and even stitched a hem into the whole thing. But at 1:06 a.m. the night before I left for the trip, I realized the skirt was ugly. I mean, really. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking, believing I was capable of sewing anything even remotely cute.

I’d show you a picture of the finished-yet-not-given skirt, but I put it in the trashcan last night.

Another domestic dream dead, my friends. And yet I will somehow continue to carry on.

And I’ll probably go get a haircut like Shannon’s, since you think it would look so good on me.

The “felt” that you are talking about is probably a sheet of fun foam. You can buy it at Hobby Lobby too. Usually it is with the kids craft stuff. It comes in many different colors and you can also buy it pre-cut into shapes.

Another random thing – I read the other day a verse (should have written it down) about how the battle belongs to the Lord. For some reason my mind jumped back to your post on love being like a battlefield… Guess he is going to fight the fight for you. But I agree it doesn’t hurt to arm yourself with some killer hair! :)

Can’t wait to hear about the whole wedding weekend. And next time if you want to make a tutu instead, I can tell you how. It is SUPER easy!

Oh Please AB! All of the photos I have seen of you have been gorgeous! Truly – I’m not just saying this ’cause I’m your sister from another mister!

This has absolutely nothing to do with your blog post, but a friend sent me an email today with a written piece by a Maya Angelou, and the first two lines of the writing sounded like something you would appreciate:

‘A woman’s heart should be so hidden in Christ
That a man should have to seek Him first to find her.’

Oh story of my life getting ‘great’ ideas to make ‘cute’ or ‘exciting’ things and then realising “What the heck was I thinking?”
like the time I cut giant silouettes of animals to put my bedroom wall with the words ‘Life is a Menagerie’ on a banner… I got half way through and thought ‘Am I really 23 years old and I’m cutting out silouettes of animals for my bedroom wall, when did I think this would be cool?’
or the time I decided I could fix and paint my own bookcase…let’s say my painting skills aren’t skills at all
or the time I made a costume to look like a ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants’ for my friends 21st because again I thought it would be funny… all the other girls looked cute… I looked giant yellow cardboard box… i did not pick up that night.
or the time I cut my own hair because I wanted to look like Amelie… can anyone say “emergency hair appointment”

oh the list could go on. 10 points for trying my friend!!

I would venture a guess that the reason people were commenting that you looked fab is because you made a comment about “look, my hair is flipping out today” or something like that. Which we would assume meant you were in the picture. I almost left a comment too, but it just didn’t look enough like you… ;)
You will have to post some pictures from the wedding though! (with you in them!)

haha. Or perhaps AB, they were commenting on the fact that your stick figure representation of yourself was so realistic. Especially that awesome hair! LOL
