It turns out that a lot is in a name, especially the chance to win something.

Right before I left for Katie’s wedding, I told you about receiving this darling thing as a gift:

I didn’t know it at the time, but that little piece of machinery was about to change my life. Anyone who has EVER ridden with me on ANY trip knows just how bad I am at directions. I’m awful. Truly, terrible. Worse than bad. ARE YOU GETTING THE IDEA HERE?

From the moment I plugged him in, I knew that Mr. GPS and I were soul mates. I’ve thought I’ve loved other boys before, but I assure you that I did not know what true love was until I met my little directional device.

Now, I know what you’re thinking — how can I be so sure he’s a boy? Well, I’ll tell you how I know for certain that he’s a boy:

1. He never wants to stop and ask for directions.

2. He has excellent manners; when I make a wrong turn, he gently asks me to “please make a u-turn.”

3. When I profess my true love to him on a daily basis upon entering my automobile and seeing him there waiting for me, he doesn’t say much back. Strong, silent type, you know?

Here’s the only problem we’ve run into so far: he needs a name. Now, I’ve got his “voice” set to British English Male, which the company nicknamed Daniel. I’m not necessarily against the name Daniel, but I think y’all can do better than that.

And so, I implore you: whatever shall I name my new boyfriend? Remember, he needs something that sounds British and masculine and strong yet sensitive. It needs to be something that goes well with both “I love you” and “ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE SENDING ME THE RIGHT WAY?”

To thank you for your help, I’ll be randomly selecting one commenter to win THIS:

It’s the new CD from Above Only, a Christian hard rock back that I happen to have a little inside connection with. All you have to do to be entered is leave your suggestion for a name for Mr. GPS in the comments below by midnight on Wednesday, July 1. I’ll randomly select a winner from all entries received, though the name I pick for Mr. GPS may be different than the entry I pull out of a hat. Only one entry per person please!

Hugh. A good, British name.

My dad has a GPS with a female British voice. Her name is Jane–his choice, not the company’s. Because he loves Jane Seymore.

I’m too old for the CD, but since he’s sorta like your chauffeur, the name Jeeves comes to mind.

I think you should go with either James…as in James Bond. After all…he is British and cute and a secret agent…I don’t think secret agents have to ask for directions. My other choice would be William…not really sure why but it sounds like a romantic British name. Can’t wait to find out who you pick!!!

Or you could just go with Mr Darcy’s first name – Fitzwilliam. Also a gem.

Nothing new here… I like James or Reginald.

We have one, but ours is a girl. :) We named her Carmen… you know, Carmen Garmin! lol

(psst.. Courtney – maybe the name William sounds British to you because of that one prince?)

Tony… as in Tony Blair. I love love his voice. I used to put the TV on C-SPAN sometimes just to hear him speak. I always said if I could get a copy of him reading children’s books, I would play it all the time, for my kids you, not me. :) So if “Daniel” has a delectable voice, he should be called Tony!

I understand your love….

When I was in high school forensics, I did a humorous interpretation of a girl who was in love with a talking coke machine….who promptly stole it to have in her own home. Alas, thing quickly went awry when his words became flat and meaningless….”please deposit more money” and “thank you, have a nice day” soon lost their lilt….

Enjoy your Mr. GPS! xo Amy

My original idea was Mr. Belvedere, but that name really doesn’t quicken the pulse now does it?

I like Amanda’s idea for Edmund. Yes, he should be Edmund.

I love this naming game. I think you should name him one of these: Zed, Vaughn, Toby, Piers, Nigel, or Ignatius (Iggy for short!)

We gave our daughter a GPS for Christmas and she also chose the British guy’s voice. She named him Nigel :-)
I think Myles is a good British name AND you’ve got that play on words. Myles goes miles with you :-)
(I see someone else suggested Miles, but you really should spell it Myles to make him British!)

We call ours Stella, because she’s a little tough and bossy, and we love her so!

I have a dear, British friend named Lee. We all love his accent and he has the best. laugh. ever. He’s a pastor and is kind, sensitive, adorable, and masculine.

Lee, can you please take me to the nearest Krispy Kreme? Lee, what’s the phone number for the movie theatre? Lee, where is the nearest hair salon?

Works for me! =)

I love my GPS! Love it! It has changed my life…however mine is a woman, and she doesn’t have a name.

For yours I think you should give him a full British name so his intials are GPS. I like the first name Gibert. Gill for short.

Comment from Angela G.
Time: June 30, 2009, 3:01 pm

Name him Charles! The perfect chauffeur name, and oh, can’t you just HEAR the British accent when you say Charles? Charles is also a strong and stable name; it says “I love you” and “Yes, you can trust me to get you there without mishap”.

My friend Peter named his GPS Gertrude, but I regret to inform you that their relationship is not so serene. He tries to be better than her and tells her to shut up when she contradicts his driving ;(

i have a dog named “seamore”
and technically your gps lets you “see more” things :)
i could not get any where with out mine, im hopeless with directions, in fact, sometimes i even get lost with it…oops
but more importantly: SEAMORE great name :)

I totally feel your love for Mr. GPS. Since I received mine about 2 years ago, we have been inseparable. We even fly together.

Since he is British, he should have a British name…and while we’re at it, why not get the Queen to knight him.

Sir Bradford Charles has ha nice ring to it.

Alister.

It just screams sensitive and caring yet strong.

My Garmin is a girl; I call her Garmin (so creative of me) and stroke her lovingly when she gets flustered and needs to “recalculate.”

Clearly Rupert is the best choice. Although it’s also my sister’s dog’s name, it still sounds so um british and gentlemanly . . .

ps – I feel the same way about my gps — I think I might be beginning to develop some co-dependency issues . . .

Comment from Shara

I definitely think he needs a first, middle, and last name that you will always refer to him as, but maybe a cute nickname for those special moments when you are declaring your love and devotion for him. If only I could think of a good example, but you’ve got some great ideas from what I’ve read so far :) Oh…P.S…I do love the names Hugo and Linus. Very British and regal sounding!

Gilbert as in Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. I know it’s not quite British, but he does have a lovely accent!

SB TOTALLY stole my idea. Im seconding “Colin” … only you have to say it in a British accent. See what I mean? It’s perfect. I’ve got the kettle on as we speak, and the crumpets are just coming out of the oven; Colin’s coming over.

In other news, hubby and I had one of those treasures on our honeymoon in Costa Rica. How we would EVER have found our way around on unmarked, dirt roads is beyond me, but Ethel did us proud, every time. I vote Ethel if you ever change the voice to a girl. =)

I’ll second or third Colin – because in my twisted following of the logic – it is still an homage to Mr. Darcy…. as the yummy, handsome Colin Firth played Mr Darcy in the BBC version of P&P – and reprised the Mr. Darcy role in Bridget Jones Diary.

or… Clive.

I’m a fan of the underdog.

I vote Colonel Brandon. Colonel Christopher Brandon. Brandon. Christopher. And when you REALLY get to him know, Topher.

Remember how noble he was in “Sense and Sensibility” and how his love for Marianne never wavered even when she was, um, unlovely?

Yep, Colonel Brandon.
