Also, also, also, also: I have freshly sharpened #2 pencils ready because I am nothing if not prepared.
This is a very, very special morning in the House de Amy Beth y Puppies!
I packed a lunch for myself…
Found my favorite pair of reading glasses…
Put on one of my favorite necklaces…
And packed everything into my favorite pink bag because…
TODAY IS MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!
I haven’t mentioned it before today because I was actually still waiting to make sure I was accepted into the graduate program before telling you seeing as it would be a bit embarrassing to have to say “Hey, about that whole grad school thing? Um, actually… they didn’t want me.”
But I am in! Today begins my work on my second master’s degree (I graduated in 2007 with my first master’s in Youth and Family Ministries after finishing an undergrad degree in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations). Most people begin work on a Ph.D. if they want to go further in school after they’ve earned their M.A., but I don’t feel like that’s the best route for me right now so I’m just going after another M.A., this time in Education. By the time I finish it, I should have licensure to teach any subject for middle grades (which is grades four through eight in our state). I’m also adding a second track of classes to my degree so that I’ll be licensed to teach Psychology (and related topics) in high schools. When I finish, I should be able to teach in either a middle school OR a high school!
Going back to get a degree in Education has been on my mind for the last two years so, when I knew that my time with Starlite would be ending, I began really considering it. The full-time job that I began earlier this month carries benefits with it that include my being able to take classes at 50% – 100% reduction — something unheard of when it comes to a master’s degree. I’ll be taking a couple of classes each semester either during my lunch break or at night so that I’ll be able to continue working full-time. Isn’t this a great set-up?
I do think I’ll eventually teach for a few years with the degree, but I think there will probably be more to it than just that. It’s hard for me to define what I think the purpose in me going after this second degree is because, while I think I know the reason, it’s still a bit hazy and hard to explain to other people. All I know is that I am absolutely supposed to start this degree now, so starting now is exactly what I’m going to do.
No, literally. I have a math class at noon today. WHOA, right?
Also: you might want to pray that I have some divine math revelation. And stat.
Also, also: does anyone else think the fact that the people at registration yesterday printed out my class schedule on pink paper is a very, very good sign?
Also, also, also: I have a cute notebook to take notes in today. Obvs.

From what I’ve seen from your blog and facebook, education is the perfect field for you. I love school and wish I had the time (and energy) to take more classes. I am always a bit sad this time of year that I am not one of the students returning to class. GOOD LUCK!

Good for you! I think that’s great! I’m especially admirous (!?) of your willingness to take a math class to attain your master’s. There’s no degree I could come up with that could haul me into a math classroom! Your plan sounds terrific – what a great thing to be able to do it while still working. You’ll do fantastic!

I’m so glad that you are going to study education this time around. Every since I started reading the blog, I just knew that you would be an awesome teacher.
I’m undergrad Music Ed, but maybe there will be a class you need that we will have together. Hope your first day went well!!!

Jealous! Or really, excited for you! I am such a student at heart, so it excites me to see others go back to school when they’re excited about it! I myself have considered going back to school for the very purpose of getting my teaching certificate. It’s not my time yet, but maybe/hopefully in a year or two!
