In which I ask you to help me choose a mattress brand.
One of the big things on my to-do list before I get married is to buy a new mattress since I’ve been sleeping on a twin bed for the last four years and, while it has managed to hold me, Snuggles and Cuddles, I highly doubt Paul is going to fit. I asked this on my Facebook account the other day, but I figured I’d ask it here, too, because you all are a wealth of knowledge: what’s the best brand of mattress you’ve ever owned?

We bought our first one when we moved to the parsonage (7 yrs ago), at a place called Denver Mattress Co. I have no idea if those exist down south, but someone recommended it to us and it was super reasonably priced and we still crawl into bed and talk about how much we love our mattress.
It could be because our first mattress, which was a hand me down was such crap. HA.

Not a brand recommendation, but a general comment: While pillowtops feel great at first, they eventually wear so that they’re indented in the spot where you usually sleep. I think the indentation probably happens with non-pillowtop mattresses as well, but you can flip those, whereas you can’t flip a pillowtop.
(I just graduated from college last year, and bought my mattress as a hand-me-down.. as its third owner, I wish it could be flipped!)
Also, I’ve heard that the 4th of July is one of the best times of year to buy a mattress, because apparently sales are ridiculous. (Everyone wants to be barbecuing instead of mattress-shopping?)
Best of luck!

We bought a miForma memory foam mattress two years ago and love it! If one of you is a restless sleeper, a foam mattress is great because you won’t wake the other person up with your tossing and turning.
I second what T said about when to buy a mattress. We bought ours on July 4 and got a great deal. The salesman was the only other person in the store while we were looking, and he was desperate to sell us a mattress!

Amy Beth, I’m old and have lots of bad night’s sleep under my belt. Having slept on a Serta, Stearns & Foster, Sleep Number, my over the top favorite is our current mattress that we’ve had for over 8 years. I have no affiliation with this company, I’m just a huge fan: Isoform. We have the Luna bed and it just gets better with time. No flipping, it breathes, and is so comfortable that I never want to sleep away from home. Love. There’s no other way to say it. It’s as comfortable as the top of the line Tempurpedic at a fraction of the price.
I am so, so excited for Paul to arrive this weekend. I keep praying for his mom though. I can only imagine how much she will miss him.

I don’t have a brand recommendation, just a general suggestion. When I bought my mattress I bought the mid-price one (not the most expensive in the store, but not the cheapest). I think what really makes a difference is your linens. I think it’s worth spending money on really nice sheets, a think mattress pad, good pillows, etc. It’s a simple way to make your home feel very luxurious!

We have had a Tempur-Pedic for over a year and I can tell you that it is well worth the money you will spend. It comes with a warranty for years and years. We’ve had no body indentions like we did with a cheaper, though somewhat popular, memory foam mattresses. We went to a store and they showed us a demo with a bowling ball on the different mattresses–the Tempur-Pedic was the only one where the bowling ball just stopped as soon as it landed. Amazingly cool!
Also, check out any warranty on your bed. When we bought the Tempur-Pedic for ourselves and a Serta twin for our toddler, the sales lady informed us that Tempur-Pedic will replace almost anything, but if something happens to the Serta mattress (even under warranty) and there is a little stain on it, then the warranty is voided. So be careful!

My husband and I love our Tempur-Pedic. I know they are more expensive than a basic foam or pillow-top, but the warranty-alone guarantees it for 20 years. Most other mattresses have 5 year warranties so we figured that the Tempur-Pedic was estimated to last us 4 times longer (and just to plan that into the price). It was also the easiest for us both to agree on as we couldn’t find the right mix of firmness versus softness with other mattresses. It took a little getting used to compared to a normal pillow-top but we love it and miss our mattress at home when away.

You and Paul should mattress shop together. You have to both like it, and trust me – you might not agree on this one, askmehowiknow.

Oh, I am so glad you asked this question because I’ve been looking for a new mattress for a couple of years now. I hate ours, mostly because my husband had it before we were married and he slept in the middle of the bed and now there’s an indention in the middle. I have to sleep in such a way every night to keep me from falling to the middle of the bed. Ugh!
So I’m excited to see all of the answers!

My husband and I bought a Sleep Number bed when we got married twelve years ago. We are STILL using it, many moves later (now we are living overseas!) We love our bed. We can both adjust the firmness to what we prefer, and even change it as our weight/preferences change. It was heavenly to be able to make my bed firmer/softer when I was hugely pregnant and uncomfortable. I highly recommend the Sleep number bed. I know they are expensive but like I said, we have had ours for 12 years already and it is still going strong

I have a Tempurpedic. I hate it. I absolutely hate the thing. I wake up every morning literally unable to walk. If I could afford a new mattress… I’d be all over it. NOW since I have flown all over the US as a former flight attendant and slept on tons of mattresses lol I can tell you I always LOVED staying at Sheraton’s because they had the Sweet Sleeper Beds and I am telling you it was always the best night sleep!!! http://www.sheraton-hotelsathome.com/productGroup.aspx?category1=Beds&category1Name=Beds&categoryLevel=0&itemID=SH-124

Back in the early days of our marriage, we bought a mid-priced Sealy Posturepedic that worked just fine for us for a long while. We, sadly, traded that in for a pillow-top something-or-other that didn’t last long. DO NOT BUY A PILLOW-TOP MATTRESS! My husband has back issues, so a couple of years ago we splurged and bought a Tempur-Pedic. We love it.

My husband and I LOVE our Denver Mattress Co. Dr.’s Choice Mattress. We love it so much that all of my family bought one also, and they love theirs too.
Congratulations on your engagement, Amy Beth! I have been following your blog for years now, and I am so excited for what God is doing in your life! Paul seems like a great, Godly man, to go with you, such a Godly woman. I am praying that God will richly bless your marriage.

I’m sure tempurpedic is really awesome, but if that’s out of your price range, consider a cheaper memory foam mattress from Costco. We’ve gotten two from there (a queen and a king) and been extremely happy with both of them. But be sure to try lying on a memory foam mattress in a store first (you can’t try them at costco), because some people don’t find them comfortable. They’re especially not ideal for “hot” sleepers since they curve around you and tend to keep you warmer than an inner spring mattress… but we find them really comfy! My husband has a bad back and it’s about the only thing he can really sleep on…

I just bought a 4 inch 4 lb memory foam topper for my mattress. It is now my belief that it doesn’t matter about the mattress, if you add one of these toppers!

I also have a mattress from Denver Mattress Co. It’s called “doctor [something].” I love it and when friends stay the night they always say it’s the most comfortable mattress ever. It was a bit pricey (about $1,200 for a queen), but I think it was worth every penny.

My husband and I have both Sealy and Jamison. Our Jamison pillow top wins hands down!
Congrats on EVERYTHING!! So happy for you!
